Smoke forecast, September 8

Fire
High winds and dry conditions yesterday and overnight lead to
very active fire behavior on Lionshead and Beachie Creek fires.
Yesterday the Lionshead fire moved over the Cascade Crest
and is established in the Whitewater drainage. Although
temperatures will remain low today, strong east to northeast
winds and low relative humidities will lead to very active fire
behavior again today.
Smoke
Due to increased fire growth yesterday and similar conditions
expected today, much of the forecast area will experience
heavy smoke today. East winds on the west side of the
Cascades will lead to “Unhealthy” to “Hazardous” conditions
throughout the Santiam Canyon in Detroit Lake, Breitenbush,
and Elkhorn areas. Northeast to east winds on the Lionshead
fire will bring smoke into Sisters, Bend, and Prineville
throughout the afternoon and into the evening. In addition,
smoke from new fires in Washington may impact the east side
of the Cascades again today. Heavy smoke will impact
highway 20 and 22 today and will greatly reduce visibility.
